Stray animals from College Station and Brazos County, taken into our care, are held for a minimum of 72 hours for families to find, identify and claim their pet. The owner must come in person to Aggieland Humane Society at 5359 Leonard Road to ID their pet. DO NOT WAIT, come and check immediately.

After the three days, we will evaluate the pets for adoption and rescue. They may be placed in our adoption program, foster program, adoption transfer program, or euthanized. Our goal is to return pets to their families.

Interested in Adoption? You may apply to adopt an animal you see here.  Adoptions may be completed after the pet’s stray period ends.

In Brazos County, strays are transferred to AgHS from animal control officers. AgHS does not pick up animals, AgHS has contracts with the city and county governments to house strays. If you have a question for an animal control officer, please contact your police department.


Tips For Finding A Lost Pet

There is no single place to post missing pet information, so please be diligent and explore all the resources listed below.


  • Have a current ID tag on your pet.
  • Keep contact information current with your veterinarian so “finders” can easily locate you.
  • Ask your pet care providers to join Dog Detective so they receive alerts about missing pets.  See details below in Online Resources.
  • Microchip your pet and keep contact information current. Aggieland Humane Society microchip fee: $25 with current rabies certificate

  • License your pet with Brazos County which provides:
    • 24-hour phone number for lost and found – Call: 979.775.6094
    • extended impound for tagged pets (10 days instead of 3)
    • reduced impound fee for pets with a current license


  • Post signs at intersections within a 2-mile area of where the pet was lost. In addition, post signs at grocery stores, community centers, pet stores, veterinary offices, churches, and apartment complex laundromats. If possible have a photo on the signs and fliers.
  • Advertise in newspapers and check “Lost and Found” for at least three months.  The Eagle runs free lost ads for one week, free found ads for two weeks: 979.776.7355, http://www.theeagle.com ; The Battalion: 979.845.0569, http://www.thebatt.com.
  • Visit and file a lost pet report with Aggieland Humane Society and call your Animal Control officers:

  • Notify the police if you believe that your pet may have been stolen:

  • Search the neighborhood. Walk, ride a bicycle or drive slowly through the area several times each day. A lost pet may hide during the day, so be sure to go out again at night with a flashlight and call for him.
  • Ask neighbors, letter carriers and delivery people if they have seen your dog, cat or pet.  Give them a copy of your flier with contact info and photo.  Some neighborhoods have email listings that can be used to spread the word.
  • If lost anywhere near a busy highway or road, contact your local transportation department, to see if a car has hit your pet.
  • Contact veterinary clinics both in your area and surrounding areas. An animal could be injured, rescued and taken out of the area in any direction for some distance.

  • Leave items with a familiar scent outside your home, or place pet was lost or sighted. A litter box, pet bed or a sweatshirt recently worn by a loved one can attract a pet who has strayed and become disoriented.

Post information about your missing pet online. Include complete description, details of how, when, where pet went missing, contact information to get in touch with you, a photo if possible.  Keep posting updated with sightings, news, concerns, etc.


Don’t Give Up

Don’t give up your search – even when you have little hope. Dogs, cats and all animals who have been lost for months have been reunited with their families. If you find your dog, cat or pet, make certain to inform all places you contacted and remove flyers. Otherwise, valuable time is wasted which could be used for animals who are still lost.


 How to Help A Found Pet

If you decide to keep the pet while locating the owner, please contact Aggieland Humane to place a found ad.

Reservation Required for Owner Surrender and Out of (Brazos) County Pets

Animals will be taken in by reservation only, based on available space, which will be made on a first come, first served basis. If you have questions regarding the surrender of a found pet, please call (979)775-5755. If you would like to make a reservation, please fill out one of the owner surrender forms below and email or fax it to the office.

If an animal is deemed not adoptable at the time of their reservation, the person who brought the animal in is given the following options: to keep the pet and/or to take the animal to a veterinarian for treatment, to seek placement at a local animal shelter or rescue group or owner requested euthanasia.

This is sometimes difficult because microchip and license databases are not kept current by owners.  Use of the internet to locate new telephone numbers, addresses, etc. can be helpful.

  • If the pet has an ID tag, try this contact information first.
  • Have the pet scanned for a microchip. All of the local vets and AgHS have microchip scanners, they will be happy to check a pet for a microchip.  If there is a microchip tag call to obtain contact information.

  • If licensed in Brazos County you can call this 24/7 Lost and Found number: 979.775.6094 The representative at this number will take down information and may have a report from the pet’s owners.
  • Rabies/Vet tag Call the Vet’s office with the tag number.  They can give you contact info or call the owners with your contact info.


If you decide to bring the pet to the shelter, please take time to get the word out regarding its plight.  Your ad or post can say it is in the shelter or have them contact you for details.  To be certain the owners are truly the pet’s owners, do not publicize all information.  Leave out one or two key identifiers that the owners can tell you. In cases that you cannot catch the animal call Animal Control, numbers below.  It can be of great value to post sightings of animals that are clearly lost and not caught.

**If you can keep the pet for a while Aggieland Humane Society will put a description into the Found Pet Book for people who are looking for lost pets. **If you are not able to keep it, please bring to the Shelter (mentioned above) or call the Animal Control Officer within your jurisdiction to pick it up.  The Shelter is where many will look for their lost pets.
